The Silver Age of Russian Poetry in Music
The Russian Chamber Art Society celebrates the centennial, last year, of composer Georgy Sviridov, a student of Shostakovich, and the 125th anniversary of the birth of poet Osip Mandelstam.

Baritone Kevin Wetzel will perform Sviridov's "Russia Cast Adrift," a 12-songcycle on poems by Sergey Yesenin. Tenor Timur Bekbosunov will sing Sergei Slonimsky's 1990 settings of Mandelstam's poems and, with soprano Jasmina Halimic, three songs by Vladimir Shcherbachov after poems by Alexander Blok. The Slonimsky and Shcherbachov works are Washington, D.C., premieres.

Another highlight of the concert will be Sergei Prokofiev's "Five Poems of Anna Akhmatova" of 1916, sung by Halimic. The program also includes settings of poems by two other poets of Russia's Silver Age,the decades before and after the Revolution of 1917, Boris Pasternak and MarinaTsvetaeva.
