Employment: The greatest challenge for every new graduate. The economy is getting better, yet finding a job that rewards all the effort and money invested in obtaining a degree is still very hard. That is why events like the CALUMS Job Fair are so crucial in today’s market, and this one comes with a twist: a Business Talent Show.

"We want our students to maximize their chances of success," says Jake Kim, CALUMS (California University of Management and Sciences - Virginia Campus) Financial Officer. “There are two ways of making this happen: one, getting them closer to potential employers, not only by exchanging contact information but also by allowing them [our students] to demonstrate their talents; and two, motivating and empowering them to start their own ventures, become their own bosses.” The University’s Job Fair aims to cover both approaches, and represents a valuable opportunity not only for its students but for anyone interested -it’s free and open to the community with prior email registration.

Scheduled to take place on September 24th at the Westin Arlington Gateway Hotel, the Fair will host about 30 companies from the Arlington area in search of talent, both for employment and internship opportunities. The Asian Chamber of Commerce has confirmed its participation and other business networks are expected.

And let’s not forget about the Business Talent Show.

A Win-Win Situation
The point of the Business Talent Show is that it allows anyone with a good idea to present it in front of a jury panel composed by potential investors and employers. The best proposals will get an initial investment as part of the CALUMS’ Business Incubation Center, a new program that looks to empower talented people and encourage entrepreneurship within the community. “That includes our own students,” adds Kim. “We want to give them all the tools available to become competitive, not just with a high-quality education but also with an opportunity to demonstrate their talents.”

CALUMS students will be presenting four projects during the Business Talent Show, centered on IT solutions. The Financial officer Kim says that the goal is to make these solutions available to local businesses eventually, either as investment opportunities or low-cost premium services of which they can take advantage of. The combination of talent and empowerment represents multiple paths to success. “In a way, we can say that if you bring an interesting idea to the table, we can make it happen,” says Kim. “It’s a win-win situation for all parties involved.”

Businesses and professionals are invited to attend CALUMS Job Fair free of charge. All they need to do is email gio@calums.edu in order to register, and also to submit ideas for the Business Talent Show.
